Student Spotlight: Zara Labbe

We interviewed first year dance student and dance program student from the San Francisco School of the Arts, Zara Labbe, about her experience in the SSU Dance Program–which you can find below.

Zara will also be performing in this semester's Spring Performance Festival as a part of Spring Dance.

What has your experience in the Dance Program been like?
My experience in the dance Dance Program has been inspiring and welcoming. Everybody I have met has been supportive and kind and non judgmental.

What's an important lesson you've taken away from your time in the Dance Program so far?
So far an important lesson I’ve taken away from the dance program is to “trust the process” said by many of my teachers and peers.

What has been a favorite class you've taken in Theatre Arts & Dance?
One of my favorite dance classes so far is Dance Forms with Kristen Daley. It is both challenging and invigorating and always fun. Learning new material and dancing with friends is my favorite part of class.

What do you love about dancing?
I love dancing because I am able to express my emotions in a way my words can’t. I dance because it allows me to let go of all my worries and focus on my movements.

What was the process like in making this video?
The process of making this video was a little challenging. Combining all the different clips and pairing it to the music was the hardest part of the process. Other than that issue, filming all the different clips in San Francisco was very fun. I was able to spend the day driving around the city with my mom who helped me with the filming. Some clips were taken from old performances such as the Scholarship performance, Fall Dance, and an end-of-semester showing for my Choreography class. Overall the process was very fun despite the small challenges I encountered.
